There’s one thing we need above all else to be happy and successful: self-belief.
But I’m sure you’d agree, that believing in yourself isn’t easy, especially as a young person.
It’s not something we’re born with. It grows over time from every experience we have, every stage of life. And our experiences can either build it up or break it down.
Greer is another young person we’ve seen transform during her time at Olive’s Lane.
Greer’s success is all about self-belief. She now feels safe and confident that people around her believe in her potential, and it’s helped her so much. She’s full of hope for the future and it’s all thanks to help from people like you.
Greer began attending St Kilda PCYC when she was eight years old. She loved The Hip Hop dance classes and told me this became a place she wanted to come to every week, to feel good about herself. And gradually she began to believe anything was possible.
From the quiet, nervous young woman we first met, her transformation has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Greer said “ I struggled with speaking up and self confidence. Olive’s Lane has helped me build my social skills and I’m much better at interacting with people. Olive’s Lane really helps people like me build skills and gain experience in the work force”.
Under the kind, patient and positive guidance of our head barista and mentor, Dennis Gray, today Greer bubbles over with confidence. She’s now a highly skilled barista who can handle full shifts independently, supervise other staff, make necessary decisions and communicate beautifully with anyone who crosses her path.
When Layla, our other team member, recently needed to step away, Greer stepped up, working in the coffee shop with poise and professionalism. Her communication skills flourished, and her ability to take on additional responsibilities demonstrated her remarkable growth. And now, she is looking for her next role, her next opportunity.
“It makes me want to get out of bed in the morning, to try harder, to get better at everything. I love PCYC and everyone here.”

Greer’s story is testament to the power of opportunity and the impact of a supportive work environment. You can help us do this again, and again, and again. But we need your kind donation to expand our induction and training program for 2025.
If you have already made a kind gift to support our Christmas Appeal, thank you so much. But if you have not and would still like to make a gift to help transform young lives, there is still time.
You can help a little or a lot.
Your gift of $40 will buy a day’s worth of quality coffee beans, or $300 will cover a full week of mentoring and training.
Or you can make a generous gift of your choice to truly give other young people like Greer a foothold on a future career.
We always say Olive’s Lane is not just a place to get great coffee. It’s a real world training ground, and it’s changing lives. But we need your help to do it.
Will you please add us to your Christmas list, and help more young people like Greer?
